England v India World T20 report

ENGLAND?S enduring nightmare returned to haunt them yesterday.

They were twisted and tormented inside a giant spinners? web.

The optimism of the early stages of the World Twenty20 evaporated during a crushing 90-run defeat by India.

OK, the result was largely academic as both teams had already made the second phase, known as the Super Eights.

But the way England?s batsmen looked hopelessly bereft of confidence and technical proficiency when facing India?s spinners was alarming.

They were not just dismissed, they were utterly humiliated. And India?s best slow man, Ravi Ashwin, was not even playing as captain MS Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher omitted four first-choice players.

England were seen off for just 80 in 14.4 overs.

It was their lowest total in Twenty20 and their worst margin of defeat.

Captain Stuart Broad attempted to put on a brave face.

He said: ?I?m pleased it happened now and not in a match that would have knocked us out.

?We thought India?s total of 170 was gettable but our error was losing early wickets. Spinners always enjoy bowling to new batsmen.

?For the early batsmen, hitting straight would have been a better option rather than across the line. We made it easy but we?ll learn from our mistakes.

?It?s frustrating that some days we play spin nicely and others everyone seems to play it badly.?

Eoin Morgan, Jonny Bairstow, Craig Kieswetter, Tim Bresnan, Jos Buttler and Graeme Swann were all bamboozled by the Indian twirly men.

Harbhajan Singh took 4-12 in his first international match for a year and little leggie Piyesh Chawla returned 2-13.

England?s first Super Eights encounter is against West Indies or Ireland on Thursday.
