Google Announces AOSP Support for Sony Xperia S

The payoff might not be immediate, but Google?s support for the Sony Xperia S in the Android Open Source Project could hint at an all new frontier for users. The ?experiment,? as Google described it, will see the Mountain View company working directly with the community to ?support the Xperia S within the AOSP in a manner that?s similar to how Google works with Nexus-class devices,? The Verge said.

Could this be a step toward diminishing Android?s nagging fragmentation problem? Let?s hope so.

While development is just beginning, the announcement could see expanded support for even more non-Nexus devices, which is a huge win for the Android community. Google?s decision to go with the Xperia S, in short, was because it is a ?powerful current GSM device, with an unlockable bootloader, from a manufacturer that has always been very friendly to AOSP.?

It?s an experiment, but it?s one that the Google community should welcome with very open arms. Interestingly, work done by the CyanogenMod team could play an integral part in development.
