What to watch for at the GOP convention Thursday

Here are some things to watch for at the Republican National Convention Thursday:

1. MITT'S BIG NIGHT: Mitt Romney makes his case to the nation about why he should be elected president ? and why he thinks President Barack Obama should be sent packing. The speech could set the tone of Romney's campaign for the final two months.

2. ROMNEY'S FAITH: Mitt Romney's Mormon religion, a subject he hasn't frequently addressed on the campaign trail, will get some attention as several members of Romney's church are scheduled to share personal stories about the nominee at the convention. Romney is also expected to touch on his faith in his speech.

3. ISAAC'S AFTERMATH: Hurricane Isaac has been downgraded but the slow-moving storm is expected to bring days of unending rain to parts of the Gulf Coast region. Convention speakers have been making periodic pleas for prayers and donations to the Red Cross. Expect more as the cleanup begins.

4. RUBIO'S MOMENT: Sen. Marco Rubio is a rising star in the Republican Party, a Cuban-American who was once considered a front-runner to be Mitt Romney's pick for vice president. He gets an opportunity to make his mark in a prime-time speech.

5. REMEMBER NEWT? Newt Gingrich, who called Mitt Romney a liar during the primaries for attacks on his record, wasn't expected to speak at the convention. But he and wife, Callista, are to deliver remarks early in the evening.

Five new species of cuckoo bees from the Cape Verde Islands

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? The biota of island archipelagos is of considerable interest to biologists. These isolated areas often act as 'evolutionary laboratories', spawning biological diversity rapidly and permitting many mechanisms to be observed and studied over relatively short periods of time. Such islands are often the places of new discoveries, including the documentation of new species.

The Republic of Cape Verde comprises 10 inhabited islands about 570 kilometers off the coast of West Africa and have been known since at least 1456. Although the bee fauna of the islands was thought to be moderately well known, research by Dr. Jakub Straka of Charles University in Prague and Dr. Michael S. Engel of the University of Kansas have shown that this is not the case. A recent study published in the Open Access journal ZooKeys documents the cuckoo bee fauna of the islands, revealing that their entire fauna of cuckoo bee species is in fact new to science.

These bees, like the more widely known cuckoo birds, invade the nests of other host bee species. While the host is out collecting pollen for its brood, the cuckoo bee female enters the nest and deposits her eggs on the food resource. The cuckoo bee egg hatches and the immature promptly dispatches the host egg, leaving the pollen and nectar reserves for itself.

The Cape Verde cuckoos are mostly large, black-and-white species, almost zebra-like in their appearance. However, one species, Chiasmognathus batelkai, is quite small, merely 3.2 -- 4.2 millimeters in length. Despite its small proportions, C. batelkai is still the largest species of its genus, a group which otherwise comprises even more diminutive species. It appears as though at slightly less than 5 mm, C. batelkai is a remarkable case of island 'gigantism', whereby founder effects or genetic drift lead to an increased body size in isolated populations during the initial stages of species origination and differentiation.

The researchers are now attempting to explore the diversity of the cuckoo bees' hosts and also to understand their evolutionary diversification across the archipelago.

Policeman, civilian killed in Mombasa grenade attack

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - A Kenyan police officer and a civilian were killed on Tuesday when rioters hurled a grenade at officers who were trying to quell protests in the port city of Mombasa, police said.

The riots broke out on Monday after the killing of a Muslim cleric accused by the United States of helping Islamist militants in Somalia.

"They have attacked our officers with a grenade. They threw it inside their lorry (police truck). Two people are dead, one of them is an officer the other is a civilian," said Benedict Kigen, a senior police intelligence officer in Mombasa.

3 Ways to Finance your Franchise Business

Franchising is a way of practicing another firm?s successful business model. In a franchise business, rights are granted to individuals or groups so that it can market a company?s goods & services within an assured territory.

Nowadays, there are many popular franchises operating successfully all around the world for example, McDonald?s, Subway, Domino?s Pizza, Hardee?s and the UPS Store.

Franchising businesses are of many different types that requires franchise loans to operate effectively. These include businesses like health & fitness, automotive industry & financial services. Sustaining a franchise with minimum cash can be hard. Hence, many Franchise owners look for alternative franchise funding options to achieve sustainability.

We have compiled a list of 3 financial institutions which will help you in financing your franchise business

Commercial Bank Loans
Many small banks offer loans for small businesses. But such institutions always ask for collaterals and reject applicants with bad credit history. They ask for a lot of paperwork and take months to dispatch the funding. Documentation is extremely relevant for a successful application. In this documentation, traditional lenders ask for business plan and a comprehensive business proposal so that they know that you can repay the loan they also demand financial plan so that they know where and how the money will be used.

Merchant Companies
If you are in urgent need of credit and do not have time to provide collaterals or fill applications. However, a few necessary documents will be required by the loan providing company ensuring that lending you credit might not be too risky business and that you will be able to repay the entire sum. Lines of credit can also be acquired; business cash advance is also an option for small business owners.

SBA Loans
Small Business Administration loans are one of the most common forms of financing for a franchise. These loans are designed to eliminate risk by offering a guarantee on the principal of the loan from the federal government.

Before you acquire funding, remember to keep your options open. Ask everyone and anyone who might be helpful in your search for finance. Continue your work until you find the best financing option for your franchise business.

Get your home and family ready for: Back to School Mode!

Summer is just about over, and it?s time to get yourself, family and home back into school mode.? This time of year can be chaotic for most, especially after playing and late summer nights.? Now that the days will be getting shorter, it will be getting darker soon, and school is around the corner (or has already started for some). These helpful tips will get your home and family ready for the new school year.

Get Everyone?s Schedule on Track:

During the last 2 weeks of summer, you should get a schedule together for your whole family.? This includes snack times, meal times, homework, bath, activities, and sleeping.? Do not try to introduce this the night before school, or you will have one chaotic morning.? Allow yourself and family some time to get accustomed to a new routine, including your little ones.

Organize your paper piles:

This is a good time to get a filing system together, and have a place for all of your paper work.? The more organized your home is, the easier it is for your family to develop an organization system for themselves, (including papers, homework, clothes, etc).? Make sure all the proper documentation is in order for schools and coaches too, including medical exams, physicals, immunizations, proper registrations?necessary for school, etc.

Clean those Closets out and Shop:

Go through your closets, get rid or donate items including shoes, clothes, junk, etc that you, (or your children) will no longer need, use, fit, etc.? This will help you get a wardrobe necessity list together, so you will know what your child will need for school.? As far as school supplies go, it?s a good time to shop in July and August for back to school items, most schools will give you a list of supplies your child/teen will need for the upcoming school year.?

Create a Calendar of Events:

Post a family calendar for everyone to see on a fridge, near the phone, or in a central place.? You can use an actual calendar, or white board, that will include lunch menus, assignment sheets, activities, sport practices.?? I put everything in my phone, but it?s always a good idea to have a back up calendar.

Plan The Night Before:

You can make your mornings easier by planning a? menu the day before, making lunches the night before, some people will even?shower the night before, laying out clothes, shoes, etc.? I like to do crock-pot meals early morning so that way in the evening there is less time worrying about dinner.??You can do a weekly menu, so your?e not trying to come up with different ideas the day before.? Another way to get organized is make a couple meals on the weekend and freeze them so all you will have to do is heat them up during the week.? Cutting your fruits and vegetables ahead of time will save you time for snacks also.?

All of these tips should help you and your family get ready for the new school year, and have it be your most organized year ever!

Big names of GOP left offstage, and not by accident

Some of the biggest names in politics will be missing from the stage during the Republican National Convention this week in Tampa, and that?s no accident. The Mitt Romney campaign is aiming to focus squarely on President Obama?s record and the GOP future rather than on polarizing figures and controversies from the past.

The idea is to portray a competent, forward-looking party?and that has translated into leaving out a recent president and vice president, some tea party stars, and most of the Republicans who only months ago were fighting Romney for the nomination. The absent former rivals include Rep. Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa straw poll in 2011; former pizza magnate Herman Cain, who once led national polls during the primary race; Texas Gov. Rick Perry, viewed as a juggernaut before he ran; and retiring Rep. Ron Paul, who is getting a video tribute but no live address.

Also missing from the podium, and the convention as well: Former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush and Cheney represent a decade of GOP dominance that voters don?t remember fondly. Even Republicans have been highly critical of deficit spending and bailouts during the Bush-Cheney years.

The two decided separately not to attend. They probably realized the ramifications of showing up, said Al Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union. ?The leaders of the party from the last decade agree it?s in the party?s best interest to move forward,? he said.

Almost all of these no-shows have national favorability ratings in the 20s and 30s. That includes former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who made an electric convention debut four years ago as the GOP vice presidential pick but won?t be onstage this year. Her absence, along with that of Cain, Bachmann, Donald Trump, and other tea party favorites, has not gone unnoticed. The conservative group TheTeaParty.net has asked conservatives to sign a petition condemning convention organizers for what they call a blatant and outrageous attempt ?to silence TEA PARTY voices and ignore the historic success of the Tea Party since 2009.?

Convention organizers are clearly aiming for the preferred audience in a new National Journal Convention Insiders Poll, in which 71 percent of Republican Insiders said it was more important for the convention to appeal to swing voters. Only 22 percent said it was more important to energize the base. Perhaps even more relevant for GOP planners: In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll last month, only 25 percent of Americans said they supported the tea party; 65 percent said they did not.

(Some Democrats, of course, will also be notably absent in Charlotte next week, including former Vice President Al Gore and former presidential contender Michael Dukakis. But Bill Clinton will speak just before President Obama accepts his renomination. And in 2008, even after Hillary Rodham Clinton?s long, hard primary fight against Obama, both Clintons spoke at the convention in a show of party unity?after Obama had chosen another rival, Joe Biden, as his running mate.)

The GOP nomination fight was a free-for-all of charges and countercharges. ?It was a bruising primary, a roller-coaster primary where some very nasty words were exchanged,? said Ron Bonjean, a Republican strategist. For instance, Perry saying Romney had practiced ?vulture capitalism,? Gingrich?s never-ending complaints that Romney and his allies were buying the election, and former Sen. Rick Santorum?s assertion that Romney was ?the worst Republican in the country to put up against Obama.?

Bonjean said putting former rivals onstage would make them look hypocritical after all that. But Santorum nevertheless scored a speaking role this week, and Gingrich did as well. A revised schedule issued on Sunday shows him slotted for an appearance with his wife on Thursday night. The rest of Romney?s onetime competitors? No go.

A Computer disaster averted and my business continues on ? The ...

I have to share this story? This is one of those really positive experiences, and I wanted to shout it out.

In my office, we?re not in the cloud yet. At least our computers aren?t. We have a full Windows 2008 server that?s kept in a well ventilated closet. Inside the server, we have 2 fully mirrored hard drives (or at least I think we do!)

About 2 months ago, I made the difficult decision to switch my computer service companies, and switched over to Eversafe IT Services.

Last Tuesday morning, I came in to my office at 9, and there was a message for me from Eversafe, letting me know that one of our Hard Drives had failed Tuesday morning at 2:15 AM , and that Dell would be coming by in the afternoon to put in a replacement drive.

At noon, a Fedex shipment arrives from Dell, and at 2PM, an older gentleman in some sort of uniform shows up to install the drive. Honestly, this guy was here at 2PM, and was gone by 2:05 PM.

During all this time, my office staff were totally oblivious to all this, with all our computers, including our main computer, running just fine.

At 3PM, my Eversafe guy calls me up to confirm all is good. Apparently, he told me, that he actually had been woken up by his network operations people at 2:15 AM because of the severity of this problem.

As smooth an experience as this was for me as a user, it could have been far worse. Part of my luck was that I had a pretty robust computer server that allows for a computer guy to replace a hard drive without turning it off. This thing even has TWO power supplies and with each plugged into 2 different battery backup units!.

But the reason that I had switched computer service companies was because I became aware that the OTHER hard drive had actually failed about a year ago, and no one knew about this, in spite of the fact that a principal reason that I was paying for managed services on my server was to detect just such a thing happening.? The? other drive was replaced only 2 months ago.

Had I not made that switch, my entire office computer system would have crashed this past Tuesday night.

What?s your backup plan? Something I try to preach to all my clients is that it?s not a question of IF your computer?s hard drive will fail, but WHEN. It WILL fail! So, you need to have the procedures in place to detect it early enough? so it?s not a disruption, as I was so fortunate to have done.? You also need to have plans to restore that data in the event of more catastrophic loss, which I?d like to believe I?m prepared for as well.

Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on moon, dies

Astronaut Neil Armstrong awed the entire planet when he became the first man to step foot on the moon in 1969. He died Saturday at age 82. NBC's Tom Costello reports on Armstrong's life and legacy.

By Alan Boyle

First moonwalker Neil Armstrong's death at the age of 82 marks the passing of a "reluctant American hero," as well as the dimming of the Space Age's brightest moment.

His death followed complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent this month, Armstrong's family said today in a statement released by NASA. The first public report?of?Armstrong's death came via NBC News' Cape Canaveral correspondent, Jay Barbree, a longtime friend.?

Armstrong has been immortalized in human history as the first human to set foot on a celestial body beyond Earth. "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," he radioed back to Earth from the moon on July 20, 1969.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said that "as long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them."

Armstrong's fellow moonwalker on the Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin, was among the legions mourning his passage. "We are missing a great spokesman and leader in the space program," Aldrin said in a BBC interview. He said he'd remember Armstrong "as being a very capable commander and leader of an achievement that will be recognized until man sets foot on the planet Mars."

Michael Collins, the crewmate who circled the moon in the Apollo 11 command module while Armstrong and Aldrin took that first trip to the lunar surface, also paid tribute to his commander in a NASA statement: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

President Barack Obama said that Armstrong and his crew "carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation," and that the first steps on the moon "delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten."

NBC's Jay Barbree, who has covered every manned space mission in U.S. history, was first to break the news that Neil Armstrong had died. He discusses the astronaut's life with NBC's Lester Holt.

"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ? including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space," Obama said in a White House statement. "That legacy will endure ? sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

The "one small step" served as the climax of a superpower space race with the Soviet Union, and arguably established the United States' primacy in outer space for decades to come. But Apollo 11 also set a precedent for peaceful cooperation in space. "We came in peace for all mankind," the plaque left behind on the moon read. At one point during Armstrong's first moonwalk, he stopped for what he called a "tender moment" and set down a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who died in the course of their duties.

Before and after the moon
The Ohio-born Armstrong began his career in aerospace as a Navy fighter pilot who served with distinction in the Korean War. During the 1950s, he was a test pilot with experience flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft. He was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962, and during his mission as Gemini 8 commander in 1966, he tamed his wildly spinning capsule and brought it in for an emergency landing.

See images from the career of astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong.

That quiet cool served him well during Apollo 11, when he had to take manual control of the lunar module, nicknamed Eagle, during the landing. When the craft touched down in the moon's Sea of Tranquility, about 30 seconds' worth of fuel remained.

"Houston, Tranquility Base here," Armstrong reported to Mission Control. "The Eagle has landed."

Armstrong and Aldrin spent more than 21 hours on the lunar surface, including two and a half hours' worth of moonwalking. They were amazed to come back to Earth and see how millions of people across the planet had followed their exploits. "Neil, look up there," Aldrin told him as he pointed at a TV screen. "We missed the whole thing."

After his moon mission, Armstrong took a low profile, becoming what his family called a "reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job." He left NASA in 1971, and took on executive positions in the aerospace industry as well as a teaching position in the University of Cincinnati's engineering department. ?Armstrong served on several policy commissions, including the presidential panel that investigated the 1986 Challenger explosion.

Concerned about future spaceflight
In his latter years, Armstrong became increasingly concerned about America's continuing leadership in space. He was a strong proponent of efforts to send American astronauts back to the moon, and feared that NASA's cancellation of its return-to-the-moon program would cede America's position as a leader in space exploration to other nations.?

"Some question why America should return to the moon," Armstrong told a House committee in 2010. "'After all,' they say, 'we have already been there.' I find that mystifying. It would be as if 16th-century monarchs proclaimed that 'we need not go to the New World, we have already been there.'"

When NBC's Jay Barbree asked Armstrong last month to reflect on the future of spaceflight, for the 43rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, the former astronaut pointed to remarks in which he said the lunar environment was "an exceptional location to learn about traveling to more distant places."

"I am persuaded that a return to the moon would be the most productive path to expanding the human presence in the solar system," he wrote.

Armstrong was famous for staying out of fame's spotlight as much as he could. Some outsiders may have faulted him for his reticence, but not his fellow astronauts.

"Most of our group?in those days could have accomplished?the challenge of the mission," Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham told NBC News' James Oberg in an email, "but I do not know?a one that could have handled the?resulting notoriety as well as Neil did."?

Over the past year, Armstrong was a bit more in the public eye. Last November, he and other space pioneers ? including Aldrin, Collins and John Glenn, the first American in orbit ??were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

In February, Armstrong spoke at Ohio State University during a February event honoring the 50th anniversary of Glenn's history-making spaceflight. In May, Armstrong joined Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida to support the opening of the National Flight Academy, which aims to teach math and science to kids through an aviation-oriented camp.

On Aug. 7, just two days after his 82nd birthday, Armstrong underwent quadruple-bypass heart surgery after flunking a medical stress test. At the time, his wife, Carol, reported that her husband was "doing great" ? but today the family said complications from that surgery led to his death.

Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon and his now famous first words.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves," the family said in today's statement. "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, NASA said. A website, NeilArmstrongInfo.com, has been created to provide more information about Armstrong's life and legacy.

Quick bites about Neil Armstrong:

  • Armstrong's interest in flight began in childhood: He earned his student pilot's certificate on his 16th birthday, before he got an automobile driver's license. "He never had a girl. He didn't need a car. All he had to do was get out to that airport," Armstrong's father was quoted as saying in the astronaut's biography, "First Man."
  • Armstrong's pulse was measured at 150 beats per minute as he guided the lunar lander to the moon's surface, NASA said. "I believe every human has a finite number of heartbeats," Armstrong once said. "I don't intend to waste any of mine."
  • Asked about his experience on the moon, he told CBS: "It's an interesting place to be. I recommend it."
  • A crater on the moon is named for Armstrong. It is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the site of the landing.
  • In 2005 Armstrong was upset to learn that his barber had sold clippings of his hair to a collector for $3,000. The man who bought the hair refused to return it, saying he was adding it to his collection of locks from Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein and others.
  • Although he was famously reticent, Armstrong once appeared in a TV commercial for Chrysler. He said he made the ad because of Chrysler's engineering history and his desire to help the company out of financial troubles.

Gatland to coach 2013 British and Irish Lions

Wales coach Warren Gatland has confirmed that he will be coach of the 2013 British and Irish Lions and that the official announcement will be made early next month.

Gatland also expressed his surprise of the Wallabies poor showing against the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship Bledisloe Cup clash last weekend.

The New Zealander has been the favourite to be named 2013 British and Irish Lions coach for some time but he has now admitted that it is all but a done deal.

Gatland's appointment will keep him away from Wales during the 2013 Six Nations championship but he will be in charge of them for Wales' matches against the All Blacks and Australia in November and December.

"I go back (to Britain) on Sunday and I've got to go to Scotland for a couple of days planning with a couple of people from the Lions," Gatland told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"And then there's an announcement on September 4. "

"We still haven't signed anything yet but it's very close, and if I do take the position I'll be seconded to the Lions for 10 months, but they've allowed me to be involved in the All Blacks Test (against Wales) for that week, and the Australian week."

"I won't coach the Samoa and Argentinian weeks or be involved in the Six Nations. I think that's trying to give the position some neutrality."

Gatland was speaking at a public engagement at Waikato University in his home town of Hamilton and when he takes the appointment he will become the second New Zealand born Wales coach to lead the Lions.

The New Zealander said that he relishes the format of the British and Irish Lions tours.

"The great thing about the tour is that it's the old-style tour. It's 10 games in Australia - the first game is in Hong Kong against the Barbarians, and then we play the five Super Rugby franchises and three Tests against Australia, and I think a game against NSW Country.

"It's a great chance to mould players from four different countries together is such a short period. "

"I think we get them for about a week before we go on tour, and it's a great experience.

"It's difficult to do. As a concept you want the Lions to be successful."

"After 2005, they brought two teams (to NZ) and got well beaten, and it was almost as if people were talking about getting rid of the Lions, but it does generate massive amounts to the country that is hosting the Lions. "

"The television deal is huge ... (but) it's important that the Lions in their own right are successful as an entity."

Speaking about the Lions opposition next year Gatland said he was surprised at the Wallabies poor showing last week and said that a lack of X-factor players has left them "vulnerable".

"I thought there were disappointing, and I was surprised with the style of game they played," Gatland said.

"One of the things with the Wallabies is that they could have snatched it at the end ... (but) I thought the All Blacks should have been 15, 20 points in front. "

"I think the Wallabies will find Eden Park really tough this weekend."

Gatland said that he thought that a combination of injuries and selections had dulled the Wallabies' cutting edge.

"I thought the Wallabies were a little bit vulnerable," he said. "You need three or four X-factor players, players that can make a difference ... At the moment Australia are probably lacking two or three X-factor players. "

"When Genia plays well he's fantastic; you have someone like Quade Cooper, and they are missing (James) O'Connor. "

"Kurtley Beale, Digby Ioane ... you put those five together and they are a different animal, because they have got some real firepower."

Tips on Preparing Food for Burning Man ? Bay Area Bites | KQED ...

24th August 2012

Grilled Cheese at Dust City Diner at Burning Man 2011. Photo Credit: Ana Grillo

Today I bought three huge bags of neon fur and a pound of glitter to mod podge. Because that?s just the kind of stuff on your to-do list when you?re getting ready for Burning Man.

It?s my first burn and I am positively buzzing with anticipation. Outfits and magical fairy dust aside, there are practical survival things to think about too, like what are we going to eat?

We are going to be in the middle of the desert in hundred degree weather and no refrigeration, just coolers and a supply of ice. It?s going to be extreme camping cooking. I?ve done my research and have picked up some great tips:

  1. Ziplocks are your best friend. Even better, a vacuum sealer is your bestest best friend, but Ziplocks will do fine. Playa dust will get on everything and the best way to minimize ingestion of it is to prepare and portion out meals ahead of time.
  2. Portion out your ice in Ziplocks. When it melts, your cooler won?t turn into a soupy mess, and you?ll have a baggie of ice-cold water to drink. Ahh, refreshing!
  3. Elevate your food in the cooler using Tupperware or layers of cardboard. If your bags of ice leak, this adds some protection for your goods so they?re not sitting on the bottom of your cooler in water.
  4. Label your coolers with contents. This will minimize unnecessary opening and closing. This especially holds true if you are the kind of person who stands in front of the fridge hemming and hawing over what you?re in the mood for.
  5. Your body will crave hydration, protein, and sodium. Plan accordingly. Some popular items: bacon, soups, chili, peanut butter.
  6. Opt for sturdy breads. Flat bread and naan will last longer than softer breads.
  7. Don?t forget your coffee/tea/French press. Mint tea can help settle stomachs.
  8. Bring Coconut Oil. You can cook with it, use it to soften hands and feet battered by the elements, and it doesn't require refrigeration.
  9. Have an easy meal ready for Night 1. You are going to be excited and busy setting up camp. It may be late. You won?t want to cook a thing. Grab a burrito in Reno so you have something easy and ready to eat.
  10. Get some of your favorite take-out and freeze it. It will be a great later-in-the-week treat. Indian? Great choice. Sushi? Not so much.

My game plan is to prepare as much as possible in advance, portion out the meals, vacuum seal, and freeze them so that on-site prep will be fast, easy, and will produce minimal grey water (you are not allowed to dump waste water on the playa).

Finding A Credit Counselor

credit counselingCredit counseling isn?t just for those filing for bankruptcy, it is open to anyone looking for information on how to resolve debt, manage their finances or learn tricks for improving credit scores. While many credit counseling agencies operate around the country, not all are created equal. In order to ensure you have the best credit counselor, look for a few simple traits.

The? key to a reputable credit counseling agency is their non-profit status. Although there are plenty of companies that offer similar services and charge large fees, it is? important that you work with an agency who operates free of charge. Debt management companies often advertise their credit counseling programs at a price, but there is no? need to pay for these services.

It is also important to find an agency that offers a variety of products and services. From the debtors education course for bankruptcy filers, courses on budgeting and saving, to simple information about investing; a well rounded company will offer a wide range of financial services.

A qualified credit counselor will carry a license to operate as well as be able to provide documentation regarding their 501(c) non-profit status. The licensure and company ratings can be verified through the Better Business Bureau.? You can also find information about approved organizations in your area by visiting the U.S. Department of Trustees website.

If you are looking for a reputable credit counseling agency or have additional questions about your debts, contact a Dallas bankruptcy attorney to discuss your financial situation.

Freedom Online: Is the Government doing enough? | *iHub_

Freedom Online: Is the Government doing enough?

The Internet has become a way of life for many Kenyans, but are you truly free to use the Internet as you would want? Bloggers contribute a lot of content online, but how free are they to communicate their idea and opinions? Citizens contribute a lot of their personal data when they access services online. How safe is their data and identity as they interact with local companies on the internet?

The Internet gives us access to important information that can be turned into knowledge and used to improve standards of living, create livelihood through entrepreneurship and even improve wellbeing through access to health information. What happens when you are unable to access the internet because you are in a remote part of Kenya? Whose responsibility is it to make sure you can access the internet and what is the role of private sector and Government?

Governments around the world make decisions on freedom of expression, universal access and data protection?most to ensure these freedoms are promoted. The Government of Kenya is among a group of pioneering governments that have committed to actively promote freedom online through the Freedom Online Coalition founded in the Netherlands in 2011.

The Freedom Online Coalition committed to meet annually at a global Conference; Kenya is proud to host the second Freedom Online Conference, which will run from September 6-7 at the UN Complex, Gigiri.

In preparation for the Conference, young activists, techies, bloggers and internet users are invited to explore and debate the themes of the conference at a round table event hosted at the iHub.

Why attend the Roundtable?

Government laws and policies can have a significant impact on citizens and businesses. To ensure the Government understands how its decisions can impact daily life and enterprise, citizens and groups must make their voice heard. The Internet Freedom Conference is an excellent platform to lobby Government and highlight issues that pertain to daily and corporate use of the Internet in Kenya.

To be effective in talking to Government, it is important to have a platform and a clear message. Join us at the Roundtable to ensure your views and experience are captured and communicated to the Government of Kenya and global community.

Who should attend?

  • Online content publishers like bloggers, website owners ?and application developers
  • Business owners or staff that offer online services like e-commerce and hosting
  • Activists and Dissidents that have an important agenda for the people of Kenya
  • Civil Society Groups who promote freedom and universal access

Who will speak at the Roundtable?

The roundtable will encourage debate among participants and will feature discussion and interaction throughout.

In addition, the Roundtable will feature some comments from subject-matter experts to help frame the discussions and recommendations, including:

  • Dr Bitange Ndemo, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Communications
  • Eunice Kariuki, Marketing Director Kenya ICT Board

Representatives from:

  • ARTICLE 19
  • Pawa254
  • National Council for Law Reporting
  • BAKE ?(Bloggers Association of Kenya)
  • Among others

Outcomes of the Roundtable

The discussions and debate from the Roundtable will be formulated into policy recommendations for Government action regarding Internet Freedom in Kenya. Representatives will be selected at the Roundtable to present these recommendations to Government leaders at a plenary session of the Internet Freedom Conference.

This is a unique opportunity to have your voice heard. Come and discuss what the Internet Freedom means to you.

Looking for Leaders to Create a Culture of Sustainable Business ...

?
In order to successfully address problems such as resource scarcity, pollution, declining biodiversity and global population growth, sustainable ideals must permeate business.

?

While there will always be the lure of using un-ecological methods to cut corners and make ?a fast buck?, it is imperative that sustainable business practices become the norm. Currently, most organisations are a far cry from this approach. ?However, it is business leaders such as CEOs and senior managers who have the most power to affect the uptake of sustainable ideals and infuse their companies with an ethos of responsible business. Therefore, it is these business leaders ?who must be at the forefront of the push to integrate sustainability into business thinking. More than anything, sustainability makes more business sense ? even to the financial bottom line.

?

Some CEOs, such as Paul Polman of Unilever, our 2011 Grand Prix Winner, clearly believe that sustainability is not only the right thing, but the smart thing for long term business stability and success. Polman has stated that he wants Unilever?s ambitious and laudable Sustainable Living Plan to act as a positive example for the business case for sustainability. Unilever are making good progress towards their targets; they plan to source 100% of agricultural raw materials sustainably by 2020, and have already increased the amount from 14% in 2010 to 24% last year, so it is no surprise that Unilever?s share price has steadily increased following adoption of the Sustainable Living Plan.

?

The actions of pioneers such as Unilever notwithstanding, sustainability is not among the top priorities for most business leaders. The recently published 15th annual Global CEO Survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)?may appear a bit misleading towards CEO priorities as it does not directly refer to sustainability. Almost no sustainability-related risks were mentioned as concerning the interviewed CEOs, with ?energy costs? being sole sustainability-connected risk and coming last in the issues list in 3 out of 4 regions. However, on closer inspection, ?improving efficiency and managing risks were the 3rd and 4th top personal priorities for CEOs and these are closely aligned to moving toward sustainable growth. Despite the PwC survey generally being a reliable barometer of CEOs? opinions regarding sustainability,?the outlook is more encouraging when specifically asking their feelings on the subject.

?

A more positive outlook is provided by Timetric?s Global CEO Sustainability Outlook Survey 2012. Along with being specifically focused on obtaining senior executives? opinions on the meaning, implementation, measurement and management of sustainability, the survey also links sustainability to profitability, thus connecting two business imperatives.. The survey found that 43% of overall industry suppliers expect to see an increase in profitability over the next 12 months due to implementation of sustainability, suggesting that in some cases, simply switching to more sustainable practices produced a financial return. Respondents were found to be influenced by cost, efficient operations, competitive advantage and client demand, so the decision for companies to become more sustainable will depend on changes having a positive impact on these factors.

?

The imperative that arises out of these surveys and discussions is to find the best way to align responsible, sustainable business with enhanced operations and financial returns. While it may be enough for companies to focus on the tried and tested actions such as waste reduction, recycling, more efficient water and energy use, and other traditional CSR actions, at the board level, a more radical approach is needed than simply adhering to the triple bottom line. Business leaders and CEOs need strong, visionary leadership in order to convince not only their employees but their shareholders that making moves towards sustainable business is sensible in terms of the long-term health and resilience of the company. In order to achieve this, they must believe it is not merely sensible, but right.

?

Recognising a broader array of values, and adopting a value-led?business strategy will create a corporate culture where creativity and diversity are rewarded and encouraged, leading to greater innovation and faster progress. In encouraging collaboration and sharing value, business leaders can reject traditional business practices and embrace the inherently uncertain nature?of a rapidly changing business landscape, and the bold new ideas that are needed in order to create a sustainable world.

New, miniature iPhone and iPad Dock connector cable possibly caught on camera

Photo shows what could be new sync cable for next gen iOS devices

Veister, a company specializing in USB cables, has posted a photo to their Twitter account of what could be the sync cable for the next generation of iOS devices and revised versions of current products that will work in conjunction with the much expected micro dock connector.

New mini dock sync cable photo leak

The cable in question could be what we'll see ship with the next generation iPhone. How many pins the dock will have is still up for debate but most sources claim 8 or 9 pins even though this would greatly reduce backwards compatibility with current accessories.

Regardless, we should find out in a little under a month from now when Apple is expected to make an official announcement.

Pasta with Basil Pesto, Pine Nuts and Cherry Tomatoes | eCurry ...

I have? my home and my hands perfumed with basil. I have savored every moment of growing it, nurturing, harvesting and cooking with it. There is nothing more satisfying than having pasta tossed with the inexplicably fragrant and sweet fresh basil pesto. Little bites of pine nuts, slightly charred tomatoes and the artichokes make it even more special.

Early in the morning I like to tend my plants. I walk around the yard, watering and feeding them, breaking off dead twigs and leaves and having a ?heart to heart? with them. It is therapeutic. And then there is always some kind of reward awaiting; some tomatoes, of eggplants or cucumbers, and may be herbs.

It is a positive way to begin the day. The few minutes in the fresh dewy green makes my inner self move ahead in the right direction, and whispers to me that I am blessed and need to be grateful. That I am.

One of these mornings, I collected an armload of basil. It was going to be a pesto making day ? to gather the summer, and wrap up the fragrance like a freshly laundered old blanket; to be uncorked and unleashed when outside is bleak, the bushes are no more?and the butterflies do not fly anymore over my lavender. Slowly, ?I will make enough to last us until the next summer. During the upcoming?chilly days, the? aroma will dance around the home and remind us of summer.

Pesto in my home has a zillion use. Soups, salads, breads, grains, cracker ? say anything and the pesto (especially the basil pesto) will refine it. So it happened that bit of the fresh pesto went into the pasta that afternoon and made us a happy, hearty lunch. And then again we had it for dinner, with? Tomato,?Basil?Bruschetta on the side this time.

We?love La Madeleine ? Country French Cafe. Besides the fresh food (the very thought of their fresh sour dough bread with their blackberry jam, makes me want to head over there even in the middle of the night), the ambience is charming ? rustic, comfortable and the kind that would make you want to linger for hours over a cup of good coffee and a slice of cake. (This is not a review and no one paid me for this!)

While La Madeliene?s Tomato Basil soup and the pasta sauce?are notoriously good, I love their Mediterranean Pasta even more.? There is a reason why we are there smelling the fresh bread and more every other weekend. Even since I have had the basil bushes in my backyard, this the my favorite way to make pasta. It speaks freshness and warmth, and?perfume of fresh basil is just too beautiful and delicious.

This is what it says in the menu of La Madeleine:

?Mediterranean Pasta*: Bowtie pasta, mushrooms, garlic, artichoke hearts, Roma tomatoes and Kalamata olives tossed in pesto* sauce?

So the inspiration of this recipe is not just the harvest from my yard, but also our visits to this cafe. As with any pasta recipes, there are no rules to stick to. Use any vegetables (or protein) as you wish and in as much amount that you need. Same thought goes with the pesto/sauce too. I have cooked with all my favorites this time ? basil, artichokes, pine nuts and slightly charred tomatoes.

Pasta with Basil Pesto, Pine Nuts and Cherry Tomatoes

?

Ingredients: (serves? 4-6)

  5. artichoke hearts in oil (about 1/2 cup) ? use as much as you would like
  6. bell pepper, chopped -use as much as you would like
  7. pine nuts, about a fistful ? lightly toasted in a skillet until golden and cooled
  8. salt to taste
  9. 1/2 tablespoon lemon zest ? optional
  10. olive oil ? about 2 ? 2.5 tablespoon
  11. 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  12. red crushed pepper
  13. 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced
  14. A few fresh basil leaves for garnish, optional

Note: Use any vegetable or whatever else you want to use. This recipe only states what I had used on this particular day.

Method:

Over high heat, bring?about 5-6?quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add salt and 1 teaspoon oil after the water comes to a boil. Add the pasta, stir and cook until the?pasta is al dente, about 10 minutes. Drain (do not allow it to dry out so much that the surface of the pasta hardens) and save some cooking liquid.

In a large heavy bottomed pan, add garlic slices, red crushed pepper if you are using, and few turns of freshly ground pepper to a good glug of olive oil (about 2 tablespoons). Allow the oil to heat up; the oil gets infused with garlic and pepper. Increase the heat and add the cherry tomatoes. Cook for a couple of minutes at high heat until they start to soften and pop and also get charred and small blisters on the skin.

Add the artichoke hearts and bell pepper if you are using them (or whatever other vegetables). Toss them all for a couple more minutes for the spiced oil to coat them.

Reduce the heat and add the drained pasta. Toss well for the oil and veggies to combine the pasta. Add the pesto and toss carefully. If the pasta feels too dry, add the reserved water. Switch off the heat. Adjust salt. Add the pine nuts, zest?and more crushed pepper (if you want). Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil.

Garnish with fresh basil and serve warm.
