LONDON (AP) ? The London Olympics opening ceremony will be a grand spectacle ? but will it be a surprise?

In a word, no.

Director Danny Boyle wants the details to stay secret and games chief Sebastian Coe has pleaded for insiders to stop leaking details of the extravaganza. But in the age of camera phones and social media, with 10,000 performers in the ceremony, thousands of Olympic security and staff and more than 10,000 journalists already at the Olympic Park, not much can be kept out of the public domain.

"Part of the modern world means you can't really do that," Boyle acknowledged about keeping secrets as he showed journalists a mock-up of the set for the opening scene of the ceremony, weeks before the event.

So, a spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you want Friday's opening ceremony to be a surprise. Stop, stop, stop.

But if you are as irresistibly curious as the rest of us, well, prepare for everything from James Bond to Lord Voldemort to a spoonful of sugar.

Boyle has revealed only selected details about the show, But since the performers started rehearsals in June at the Olympic Stadium ? and an army of journalists started arriving to cover the July 27-Aug. 12 games ? a trickle of details about the 27 million pound ($42 million) opening ceremony has become a torrent.

The leaks became too much for Coe, who tweeted: "Share the frustration of volunteer performers and the public at Opening Ceremony being unofficially trailed. Let's (hash)savethesurprise."

His imploring hashtag fell on deaf ears. Still more information emerged.

So what do we know?

The ceremony's theme is "Isles of Wonder," inspired by William Shakespeare's play about shipwrecked castaways, "The Tempest." An actor is due to recite Caliban's speech, the one that runs "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises." Mark Rylance, who had been due to perform the lines, pulled out after the death of his stepdaughter. Kenneth Branagh is rumored to be his replacement.

Despite Boyle's enchanted-island inspiration, few expect the man who depicted Scottish heroin addicts in "Trainspotting" and Indian slum dwellers in "Slumdog Millionaire" to deliver a sanitized image of Britain.

It sounds more like Isles of Wonder and Woe ? with a big dash of British whimsy thrown in.

Boyle has said the show is "trying to show the best of us, but we're also trying to show many, many different things about our country."

The ceremony will open at 9 p.m. with the sound of a 27-ton bell ? the largest harmonically tuned bell in the world ? forged at London's 442-year-old Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which made London's Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell.

A prerecorded segment has been filmed inside Buckingham Palace, reportedly involving Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig as secret agent James Bond. If rumor is to be believed, a stuntman dressed as 007 will parachute into the stadium to start the show.

The opening sequence will evoke a pastoral idyll, the "green and pleasant land" described in William Blake's poem "Jerusalem," which has been set to music and is regarded as England's unofficial national anthem. There's a meadow, livestock, a farmer plowing his field, a cricket match ? and, in a nod to Britain's plethora of rural summer music festivals, a mosh pit.

Boyle hasn't disclosed what comes next, but has said the ceremony will depict Britain's past, present and future for a global television audience estimated at 1 billion. In addition to the athletes and performers, some 60,000 spectators will be in the stadium, including political leaders from around the world. U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty will be among those attending.

Aerial photographs of the set for the second section of the show depict dark buildings and smokestacks with the River Thames running through it. This is the other side of the country described in "Jerusalem" ? a land of "dark satanic mills."

A third act will tackle the regeneration of east London, where the Olympics are taking place, as parkland and a creative heartland, home to many artists, designers and Internet startups.

There will be vignettes drawing on British history ? Boyle's people-power version of it ? including Depression-era jobless protesters and nurses performing a tribute to the National Health Service, founded in 1948 to provide free health care for all Britons and now a much fought-over national institution.

Performers dressed as miners and factory workers have also been seen going into the stadium, and one set piece is a model of the Empire Windrush, a ship that brought hundreds of Caribbean migrants to Britain in 1948.

According to the Sunday Times, one section will feature characters from children's fiction classics including "Alice in Wonderland" and "Peter Pan" ? and a showdown between Voldemort, the villain of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books, and a horde of flying magical nannies based on Mary Poppins.

Boyle has stressed that the ceremony is not a concert ? "the real stars are the athletes" ? but music will play a key role, with musical direction by electronic duo Underworld, who have worked with Boyle since his 1996 movie "Trainspotting."

Music heard coming from the stadium in recent days ranges from "Jerusalem" ? of course ? to songs by The Beatles, The Who, the Sex Pistols, and Vangelis' theme from "Chariots of Fire."

There are also songs by newer acts, including Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah, two homegrown stars forged in the gritty London environment that Boyle is celebrating.

The final act will be former Beatle Paul McCartney ? due to lead the audience in a sing-along of "Hey Jude," with thousands of voices urging "take a sad song and make it better."

Final touches are still being put on the show, with a technical rehearsal scheduled for Monday evening and a final dress rehearsal on Wednesday. Boyle has already cut a stunt bike sequence to try to keep the show to its allotted three-hour running time so everyone can use public transport to get home.

Boyle's spectacle is only part of the Summer Games opening ceremony, much of which is dictated by Olympic protocol.

There also will be a parade of athletes from the more than 200 participating nations, speeches by dignitaries ? including the queen, who will officially declare the games open ? and of course the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

The identity of the torchbearer who will ignite the cauldron it is the most closely guarded secret of all ? and so far, that has not leaked.

Gary Hart: The Search for Humanity Continues

Much of our life is dedicated to an attempt to understand through reason -- rational, logical thought -- our existence. What do experiences mean? How do they relate? How does one event connect to another? What steps do I have to take to achieve a particular objective? Philosophers and theologians ask more fundamental questions such as 'why are we here?'

But when one human kills a dozen or more other humans who represent no threat to him, nothing seems to make sense, nothing is reasonable or rational. It causes us to question whether society is breaking down, whether there is a dark side to human nature beyond the reach of reason and sanity, even whether the veneer of civilization has become so thin that it is slipping away.

As awkward and uncomfortable as it is, candidates for political leadership should provide some reflection on such events to help us understand them. Candidates for president and other offices are social and cultural leaders as well as political ones. The political media who transmit and translate political messages to us should try to get candidates and elected officials to address fundamental questions regarding the health of our society. Neither politicians nor journalists seem comfortable dealing with these basic issues, but we need them to do so.

But the same is true of other leaders. Now is the time for major figures in the entertainment industry to discuss their role in society. Do they merely entertain? Or do they have a larger obligation? We need religious leaders, businesspeople, educators, and a large number of others to discuss the causes of mass casualty human crimes.

There are two possibilities: either there are underlying reasons for this, or it is just one-damn-thing-after-another randomness and there is nothing we can do about it. The latter is a tempting explanation, that is if you live elsewhere than in Colorado. We Coloradans think this is an exceptional place. But this is the second time this has happened in a very few years. Will there be a third, a fourth, or even more?

There is no reason in the world for any civilian (non-military, non-law enforcement) to have an assault weapon. There is no reason for those on the terrorist watch list to be able to buy 50 caliber sniper weapons. The large majority of those of us who are gun owners don't believe so and the so-called gun owners organizations do not speak for us.

Mass casualty crimes, crimes against society at large, involve gun ownership. But they involve much more. As a student of political theories and systems, I'll continue to try to understand irrationality, including in the halls of Congress, for years to come. But as a student of theology and philosophy, I'll continue to search for a better understanding of the human heart -- at its best and at its worst. Whether in Norway or Colorado, there are demons at large that threaten our attempts to understand human existence in rational terms and in spiritual terms.

We have a long way to go before we can claim to have rid ourselves of them and to have achieved a truly human society.

Activists report heavy fighting in Syria's Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian troops clashed with rebels in the city of Aleppo for a second day Saturday, forcing inhabitants to flee to safer areas in some of the fiercest fighting to date in a key bastion of support President Bashar Assad, activists said.

The rebels are trying to seize the momentum after a week of battles in the capital, Damascus, including a bombing that struck at the heart of the regime, killing four high-level officials.

Two days of clashes in Aleppo's Salaheddine district brought sustained fighting to the city's center for the first time since the uprising began in March 2011.

The city, a commercial hub and Syria's largest population center, has remained largely loyal to Assad and been spared the kind of daily bloodshed that has plagued other cities.

But Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed said dozens of fighters from the rag-tag Free Syrian Army entered Aleppo from the countryside and were fighting regime troops from inside.

"This night was very bad, there were huge explosions and the gunfire didn't stop for several hours," Saeed said via Skype. "The uprising has finally reached Aleppo."

Damascus and Aleppo are both home to elites who have benefited from close ties to Assad's regime, as well as merchant classes and minority groups who worry their status will suffer if Assad falls.

But for months, rebels have been gaining strength in poorer towns and cities in the Aleppo countryside, gaining footholds near the Turkish border.

Activists and residents reported a tense calm in Damascus Saturday, although sporadic gunfire and explosions could be heard.

Two residents who did not want to be identified for safety reasons said by telephone that the fighting peaked between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. local time.

One of the residents said most shops in the capital were closed Saturday and traffic was light.

Authorities have set up checkpoints at the entrances of Damascus in an effort to separate it from rebellious suburbs, and the resident said many grocery stores and vegetable vendors were unable to get supplies.

Piles of rubbish were starting to pile up in many parts of the city.

"The tension is palpable, people are scared about what might be coming," the resident said by telephone from the upscale middle class Mazzeh district. "A lot of people are just staying at home."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a Damascus-based activist said two people were found dead in the Midan district after regime forces stormed their apartment. The activist, who gave his name as Omar al-Dimashqi, said the pair had been stabbed with knives, but that could not be independently confirmed.

Syrian forces recaptured the battle-scarred neighborhood on Friday and proudly showed reporters the dead bodies of rebel fighters lying in rubble-strewn streets.

The fighting in Damascus has sent thousands of Syrians pouring into neighboring Lebanon and Iraq.

Iraqi officials said about 1,000 nationals had left in eight flights from Damascus over the last two days to escape the escalating civil war. Thousands more poured through a land crossing despite the rebel takeover of a major Syria border post

Capt. Saad al-Khafaji of the state-owned Iraqi Airways said Iraqi authorities sent four airplanes to Damascus airport Saturday to evacuate Iraqis stranded in the Syrian capital.

"The planes are waiting for Iraqi passengers, but few are showing up at Damascus airport," he said, adding it was due to difficulties in reaching the airport because of the violence.

Anger has been building inside Aleppo at the government's deadly crackdown on the uprising and in recent months, huge anti-government demonstrations have broken out, particularly among students at Aleppo University.

In May, Syrian forces stormed student dormitories during an anti-government protest at the university, firing tear gas and bullets in an hours-long siege that killed four students and forced the closure of the state-run school.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting that began Friday in Aleppo forced many residents to flee to safer areas.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed Aleppo residents walking with bags of belongings or packing into cars and driving away.

Another video showed protesters pounding an iron bust of Assad's late father, Hafez, with rocks in an attempt to break it. The videos could not be independently verified.

Syrian authorities did not comment on the fighting in Aleppo. State-run news agency SANA said Syrian forces overnight thwarted several infiltration attempts by "armed terrorist groups" from Lebanon at Talkalakh in the suburbs of the central Homs province. The regime refers to the rebels as "terrorists" instead of opposition elements seeking reform.

Clashes caused grave losses among the ranks of the terrorists, it said, without elaborating.

In Homs, regime forces shelled rebel held districts, part of a monthslong effort by the government to recover those areas. Amateur videos showed shells falling on the Jouret al-Shayah district in Homs, and at least two homes in apartment buildings on fire.

The commercial property deals behind charter schools | The Source ...

classroom

The marketization of public education is a trend gaining traction across the country. Commercial real estate transactions and investments in the charter school space are following suit. ?What happens when expert commercial real estate investors take on the task of displacing the public interest in education with shareholder interest?

In at least one case, some tough business lessons were learned.

A.D. Pruitt?s piece in the Wall Street Journal tells the cautionary tale of one expert in commercial real estate and its foray into charter school property deals. Entertainment Properties Trust is a movie-theater REIT owning 112 theaters in 35 states. ?Entertainment Properties got into the charter school building market, adding 37 charter school properties to its portfolio n exhange for about $72 million. ?Most of these schools are operated by a for-profit charter-school operator. ?The outcome? ?Vacant buildings, lost contracts, and most sadly, poorly served kids.

But the investment into charter schools has gotten bad marks of late. In the past few months, [for-profit school operator] Imagine lost its contracts to manage seven schools in Missouri and two in Georgia due to criticism about poor test scores and financial mismanagement. Those schools were owned by Entertainment Properties, which was then in a pinch to fill the vacant buildings.

Those nine schools represent a $72 million investment for Entertainment Properties and one-third of the number of leases the company has signed with Imagine, which currently operates about 75 schools nationwide.

The turn of events has revived concerns among investors that Entertainment Properties is veering too far from its expertise in the theater business.

?I think the Street is going to be a little hard on the stock? until the company resolves the issues that it faces with Imagine, said Rich Moore, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

Indeed, since the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education revoked the charter for Imagine Schools in St. Louis in mid-April, Entertainment Properties? stock has declined 12.9%, while the broader REIT market is basically flat.

The story?s about more than one commercial property portfolio?s setback while moving to profit from the marketization of public education. ?Entertainment Properties isn?t taking its ball and going home; CEO David Brain sees ?an increasingly favorable political climate for alternative education,? and expects to continue its foray into charter school property.

The wider story is about fundamental changes in communities. ?The United States was the world pioneer in mass education, first in primary education in the 19th century, then secondary in the 20th. ?The resulting enormous power of the country?s economy speaks directly to that commitment to public education. Competition, profit and private interest were not drivers of that commitment; access and society-wide insistence on quality education were.

While it?s not clear that charging rent to school boards will improve educational outcomes; it is clear that the marketization of primary education presents risks to CRE investors as well as to kids and to the future they represent.

(AP) ? James Eagen Holmes came from a well-tended San Diego enclave of two-story homes with red-tiled roofs, where neighbors recall him as a clean-cut, studious young man of sparing words.

Tall and dark-haired, he stared clear-eyed at the camera in a 2004 high school yearbook snapshot, wearing a white junior varsity soccer uniform ? No. 16. The son of a nurse, Arlene, and a software company manager, Robert, James Holmes was a brilliant science scholar in college.

The biggest mystery surrounding the 24-year-old doctoral student was why he would have pulled on a gas mask and shot dozens of people early Friday in a suburban Denver movie theater, as police allege.

In the age of widespread social media, no trace of Holmes could be found on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter or anywhere on the Web. Either he never engaged or he scrubbed his trail.

A longtime neighbor in San Diego, where Holmes grew up, remembers only a "shy guy ... a loner" from a churchgoing family. In addition to playing soccer at Westview High School, he ran cross country.

The bookish demeanor concealed an unspooling life. Holmes struggled to find work after graduating with highest honors in spring 2010 with a neuroscience degree from the University of California, Riverside, said the neighbor, retired electrical engineer Tom Mai.

Holmes enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver but was in the process of withdrawing, said school officials, who didn't provide a reason. The school later said in a statement that he left the program in June 2012.

As part of the advanced program in Denver, a James Holmes had been listed as making a presentation in May about Micro DNA Biomarkers in a class named "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White.

Holmes concentrated his study on "how we all behave," White added. "It's ironic and sad."

From a distance, Holmes' life appears unblemished, a young man with unlimited potential. There are no indications he had problems with police.

Somehow, the acclaimed student and quiet neighbor reached a point where he painted his hair red, called himself "The Joker," the green-haired villain from the Batman movies, according to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who said he had been briefed on the matter.

Authorities say Holmes arrived at the theater dressed in black, outfitted in a gas mask, ballistic helmet, vest and leggings, black tactical gloves and protectors on his throat and groin. He was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun.

Police said he started his attack by tossing at least gas canisters into the theater, where he had bought a ticket for the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," the new Batman movie.

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing probe into the rampage, said Holmes bought four guns from retailers in the last two months.

Holmes bought his first Glock pistol in Aurora, Colo., on May 22. Six days later, he picked up a Remington shotgun in Denver. About two weeks later, he bought a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson rifle in Thornton, Colo., and then a second Glock in Denver on July 6 ? 13 days before the shooting, the official said.

A high-volume drum magazine was attached to the rifle, an assault weapon, the official said. Police Chief Dan Oates said that a 100-round drum magazine for the rifle was recovered from the scene.

"I'm told by experts that with that drum magazine, he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds, even if it was semiautomatic, within one minute," Oates said at a news conference. "And as far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater."

Julie Adams, whose son played junior varsity soccer with Holmes, said her son remembered little about the suspect, which was unusual for the tight-knit team.

"I don't think many of the kids (teammates) knew him. He was kind of a loner," she said.

Jackie Mitchell, a furniture mover who lives several blocks from the suspect's apartment building in Colorado, said he had drinks with Holmes at a bar on Tuesday night, though he showed no sign of distress or violence.

After Holmes approached him, "we just talked about football. He had a backpack and geeky glasses and seemed like a real intelligent guy, and I figured he was one of the college students," Mitchell said.

When Mitchell saw Holmes' photo after the shooting, "the hair stood up on my back," he said. "I know this guy."

Holmes is not talking to police and has asked for a lawyer, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case. Police found jars of chemicals in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment with wires nearby, the law enforcement official said.

When he surrendered meekly in the movie house parking lot, Holmes told authorities what he'd done at his residence in the Denver suburb of Aurora, the third most populous city in Colorado.

"Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved," Holmes' family said in a statement Friday. "We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time."

San Diego Superior Court spokeswoman Karen Dalton said there were no records found under his name, not even for a traffic ticket. Riverside County prosecutors also have no criminal record for him, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

On Friday morning, police escorted the suspect's father from the family's San Diego home. The mother stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer support.

San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown spoke to reporters in the driveway of the Holmes' home, on behalf of the family.

"As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this," she said. "It's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprise."

No matter what you?re keen on: becoming more creative, conquering addiction, boosting self-esteem and increasing mind power; or looking for more esoteric experiences like lucid dreaming and astral projection, there?s a brainwave entrainment recording with isochronic tones that can help. What are Isochronic Tones? The word ??Isochronic?" consists of two parts: ??iso?" which means equal and ??chrono?" which is related to time. Isochronic tones are actually sounds that occur at intervals equal to the duration of the tone. Look at the example of a guitar string for a while. If a string is plucked and is muted after 3 seconds, then plucked and muted again after 3 seconds and so on. If this is repeated over and over again ? we?ll hear an isochronic tone. We hear the tone for 3 seconds then hear it again after 5 seconds. That is an isochronic tone which is used for brainwave entrainment. What is Brainwave Entrainment? Our brains generate different brainwave frequencies at different levels of consciousness. Brainwave frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz), or cycles per second, and they can be recorded using equipment like electroencephalogram (EEG) machines. There are generally four widely recognized frequency bands for brainwaves, namely the delta ( less 4Hz), theta (4 ? 8Hz), alpha (8 ? 12 Hz) and beta ranges ?
