Some young greyhounds to entertain spectators in Bookmakers Puppy
Some young greyhounds have gathered around for a competition in the Bookmakers Puppy at Henlow in England on Thursday, October 25, 2012. All of them are highly talented and will definitely entertain the spectators at the venue. The winner of the Grade OR
contest will be awarded a cash prize of ?150 in the end.
There is no clear favourite for the 460 metres flat encounter, which is scheduled to start at 19:39 GMT. This will make things quite interesting, but the punters will definitely not enjoy this situation, as they might be at a risk of losing some money at
the end of the day.
According to the bookmakers, the best chances of victory are with Blackrose Mia because she has been delivering solid results with consistency in this class. This will definitely put her in a very good position and the bettors will most probably risk the
maximum number of bets in her favour.
Although, the young bitch made her first appearance during the ongoing season, yet she has raced in quite a few events and will not be under any pressure right now. She has been competitive on most of the occasions and her rivals should be well aware of
this fact.
The E. Cantillon?s trained bitch will enter today?s contest from trap number four, which is not a very good position at all. She might get blocked by a few slower greyhounds around her, which could prove to be highly costly at the end of the day.
Almost a similar thing happened to her last time around, when she had to settle for third place in the end. She will need a clear run in order to make her team proud at Henlow today.
On the other hand, Severn Bolt will be looking to spoil the party for the favourite bitch. He has been given a general starting price of 3 to 1 and will come out attacking from trap number two.
Although, he is also not in the most ideal position, yet he has a chance to gain some momentum in the early stages of the race. He finished as a runner up in his most recent outing, which means that his confidence level will be good.

Consolidated net profit in the July-September period rose to 723 billion won (US$656 million) from 229 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a statement.
But sales fell 7.2 percent year-on-year to 15.74 trillion won and operating profit dropped 17.6 percent to 1.06 trillion won.
The world's third-largest steelmaker by output has streamlined its business lineup and boosted sales of high-end products to cope with oversupply of steel and slowing demand.
Posco said the won's appreciation also helped drive down its dollar-denominated debts in the period. The South Korean unit, which hit a 13-month high against the greenback on Tuesday, has been boosted by foreign inflows as dealers look to Asia for better investment returns.

PARIS (AP) ? The Paris appeals court on Wednesday ordered former Societe Generale trader Jerome Kerviel to spend three years in prison and pay back a staggering ?4.9 billion (about $7 billion) in damages for one of the biggest trading frauds in history.
The 35-year-old Kerviel, who never profited personally from his unauthorized trades, says he was a scapegoat for the bank and a victim of a financial system that runs on greed and profits. He will appeal his case to the highest court.
"I will continue to fight," he said in an interview with RTL radio. "I think the judgment is protecting Societe Generale."
He called on those in the banking industry, notably Societe Generale employees, to step forward and speak up about how the bank's managers knew about the trades.
Kerviel said he had thought the court might acquit him. "What happened today is a call for me to put a bullet in my head," he said, adding that he does "absolutely not" envision suicide. His lawyer, David Koubbi, called the verdict "absolutely lamentable."
A lower court convicted Kerviel in October 2010 of forgery, breach of trust and unauthorized computer use for covering up bets worth nearly ?50 billion ? more than the market value of the entire bank ? in 2007 and 2008.
By the time his trades were discovered in early 2008, when banks were sliding into a global crisis, he had amassed losses of almost ?5 billion on those bets.
The sentence ? a five-year prison term, with two years suspended, plus the payback of all the losses he incurred ? shocked many in the French public. After a global financial crisis that many blamed on big banks, many believed Kerviel's claim that he was a victim of an unjust system.
The appeals court Wednesday upheld the full conviction and sentence. It did not send Kerviel directly to prison, leaving him free pending his decision on whether to appeal to the Court of Cassation. He has five days to make that decision.
Kerviel had sought an acquittal, saying the bank had turned a blind eye to his exorbitant trades as long as they made money. Prosecutors and the bank say that isn't true.
Societe Generale lawyer Jean Veil said the verdict was "a great satisfaction."
He suggested the bank would take into account Kerviel's income and assets and not seek full compensation for the damages, which Kerviel would unrealistically be able to repay in his lifetime. "Societe Generale will look at it with realism," Veil told reporters.
He indicated, however, that the bank could take over royalty earnings from a book Kerviel wrote about the scandal as well as any income he earns from movie deals. "It would have been indecent for Mr. Kerviel to be able to preserve revenues coming from the exploitation of his fraud."
While Societe Generale could have the right to tap Kerviel's future income, it was not clear whether they would do so and how much they could take from him.
Kerviel was fired from the bank in the wake of the scandal, and held a modest job for a while as a computer consultant. He was unemployed at the time of his appeals trial earlier this year.
A colleague from Societe Generale who testified on Kerviel's behalf said the court didn't take into account others at the bank who likely knew about Kerviel's risky bets.
A junior futures trader such as Kerviel "could in no case do what he did without being seen" by his superiors, Philippe Hoube said. "If justice had played its role, they wouldn't have sentenced him so heavily."
An internal report by the bank has said managers failed to follow up on 74 different alarms about Kerviel's activities.
A few of the bank's executives resigned in the scandal's aftermath, including longtime Chairman Daniel Bouton. Kerviel's superiors were questioned in the probe, but none of them faced charges.
The bank says Kerviel made bets on futures contracts on three European equity indices. It said at the time that his net position appeared unremarkable because he balanced his real trades with fictitious transactions.
Anyone who knows skiing knows that Whistler is one of the greatest ski resorts in the world. There are so many options for the visitor when they come to Whistler, both on and off the mountains. There is great skiing for all abilities, with wonderful runs. Whistler is a top destination for outdoor sports enthusiasts, particularly skiers and snowboarders. It is located around two hours from Vancouver British Columbia.
Whistler and Blackcomb have a total of 8,171 skiable acres and a mile of vertical descent, so cruising from top to bottom on either mountain takes time. But don't worry, the ski area is nicely groomed and the lifts are first class. If you prefer to go on a snowshoe adventure or take a more active cross country trail, there are a multitude of routes available for your adventure. Two hundred shops fill the Village of Whistler. Fortunately, the shopping is excellent. The quality is extremely high and the variety will likely surprise you.
Easily accessible, you can travel from the Vancouver airport to Whistler in less than an hour and a half. Because it is so close to the city, a lot of locals will simply take a day trip for the skiing. There are several companies offering excellent transfer services on either a private or shared basis direct from Vancouver airport to Whistler. You will be met at the airport and taken straight to your accommodation. Most of the transportation companies use vehicles that have room to safely store sports equipment and the drivers are experienced in handling and packing equipment where necessary.
A Picturesque Village
Skiing is what people come here for in the winter, but there is much more to offer in this picturesque little village. There is no greater way to break up your day on the mountain than with sampling the wide variety of cuisine available in the village. You can find an excellent selection of food within walking distance of one another. You can try tapas, asian, fusion, pub food or even fine dining if that's what you wanted.
When you explore the village, you can really get caught up in the excitement and atmosphere that always seems to be part of Whistler life. The stylish shopping and the trendy bars buzz with life, and as afternoon moves into evening.
The fact that it is located in the mountains certainly adds to this town's allure but the practical aspects - including the reasonably priced accommodation, the vicinity of the airport in Vancouver to Whistler, and the variety of skiing options - make it a wonderful choice for a winter holiday.
Prices are competitive and the door-to-door service that really eliminates any of the traditional hassles of a car rental or even a bus shuttle service.
Edna Moffitt, the mother of burn victim Sharmeka Moffitt, wipes away tears during a press conference at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, La., on Tuesday.
By Andrew Mach, NBC News
A Louisiana woman is in critical condition after she was set on fire, resulting in burns on roughly 60 percent of her body, and her car appears to have had racial slurs written on it at the time of her attack.
Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, had parked by a walking trail in Civitan Park in Winnsboro, La., on Sunday evening to go exercise, her mother told The Shreveport Times, when she was set on fire.?
Moffitt told police she couldn?t recognize the race of her attackers but she said she thought they were wearing white hoodies. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirmed that the letters ?KKK? and the N-word were scrawled across the hood of her car, written in some sort of paste-like substance, reported?KSLA?in Louisiana.
Police are not yet classifying the incident as a hate crime. The Louisiana State Police, the Winnsboro Police Department, the Franklin Parish Sheriff?s Department and the FBI are all assisting in the ongoing investigation. ?
Moffitt said she was alone at the time but was able to put the fire out herself with a water spigot. When an officer arrived to the scene less than a minute later, she told police that three males had intentionally doused her with flammable liquid and set her ablaze.
She was rushed to the burn unit of the Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, La., where she was listed in critical condition, the News Star reported.

Investigators said Monday were unable to question Moffitt further because of the severity of her burns. Moffitt?s mother, Edna Moffitt, said her daughter was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday to treat the burns on her chest, back, arms and legs.
?They want to take the dead skin off and place other skin there if they can,? Edna Moffitt told The Shreveport Times.
Winnsboro Police said they will be tightening security at the park as a result of the incident.

?This is a horrific event for our community,? Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said Monday. ?It makes everyone uneasy. It is our hope that everyone stands together at this time, and follow the information that is gathered, follow the facts, follow the evidence, and, hopefully, that will lead us to justice in this case."
Police said they have no suspects or motives in the attack but are pursuing all avenues of investigation. They are currently awaiting?the results of a scientific analysis by the Northwest Louisiana Crime Lab?of physical evidence found at the scene.
?I have no idea who did it,? Edna Moffitt told The Shreveport Times. ?I want them to pay for what they did to her.?
A candlelight vigil for Moffitt is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Civitan Park.?

Noninvasive assay monitored treatment response in patients with metastatic prostate cancerPublic release date: 23-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

PHILADELPHIA Deciding the ideal treatment for patients with metastatic prostate cancer that stops responding to initial therapy could be guided by certain analyses of cancer cells isolated from the patients' blood, according to data published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
"The growth and survival of prostate cancer cells are very dependent on signals that the cancer cells receive through a protein called the androgen receptor," said Daniel A. Haber, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston and project leader of the Stand Up To Cancer Bioengineering and Clinical Applications of Circulating Tumor Cell Chip Dream Team. "Treatments that deprive the androgen receptor of its signals are initially highly effective in most patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Unfortunately, prostate cancer, like all cancers, undergoes evolution during therapy, and this can confer resistance to treatment."
Haber and his colleagues established a way to isolate cancer cells from the blood of patients with prostate cancer and to measure readouts of androgen receptor signaling in each of the individual cancer cells in the blood.
Prior to the initiation of androgen-deprivation therapy, the androgen receptor signaling pathway was turned on in most of the cancer cells in the blood of patients with newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer. After the initiation of androgen-deprivation therapy, the pathway turned off in the circulating tumor cells.
However, in patients whose prostate cancer had progressed after initially responding to androgen-deprivation therapy, the cancer cells in the blood were highly variable. Some cells had the androgen receptor signaling pathway turned on while other cells had it turned off. Yet other cells had characteristics of the signaling pathway being both on and off. The presence of cells with a mixed androgen receptor signaling pattern was associated with an adverse treatment outcome.
In addition, in patients treated with a new drug, abiraterone, which achieves more complete androgen deprivation than earlier treatments, an increased percentage of circulating tumor cells with androgen receptor signaling turned on despite abiraterone treatment was associated with decreased overall survival.
"This study is a proof of principle that it is possible to monitor, in patients with metastatic prostate cancer, the androgen receptor signaling pathway in real time, repeatedly and noninvasively," Haber said. "Our approach allowed us to monitor whether initial androgen-deprivation therapy was keeping the androgen signaling pathway shut down or whether the tumor was becoming resistant, and if so, by what mechanism."
"As more drugs are developed that target the different pathways that drive the recurrence of metastatic prostate cancer in different patients, it will become essential to know which drug and which pathway is relevant in each patient," he said. "Our assay will be an effective way to interrogate the tumor and follow it during the course of treatment to monitor therapy response and the emergence of drug resistance."

Today we have been introduced to four exclusive missions for Assassin?s Creed III that are only coming to the Playstation 3. The ?Benedict Arnold? missions. What seems like a neat way to get exclusive content (and notably, these exclusive missions and such are usually payed for by the console maker, to entice players to buy for their console and not someone elses), it has to beg the question on the consumer end. I bought a Xbox 360 Elite last week. I?ll be getting a Wii U next month. Assassin?s Creed III will be available for both platforms. Hell, I have a PC as well, so I have 3 of the 4 platforms you can play Assassin?s Creed III on.
I cannot play these missions no matter what platform I choose that I already own. I have to purchase a Playstation 3. Can you see where fans might be a little upset? It?s one thing to give Call of Duty Map Packs to say, Xbox players a month early (again, usually because the console maker paid for that to happen) - it?s another thing entirely to make it so consumers cannot actually attain all of the available content for a game without owning multiple copies, or pigeon holing people into a single system when you have the game available for more than that.
But wait, how can I complain? Isn?t the Wii U getting exclusive features? Sure, the GamePad features are pretty neat, and you simply can?t get that with other systems. However, that?s like talking about how PC controls are superior for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 - it doesn?t effect the actual content of the game. This goes beyond Assassin?s Creed III naturally, as we look towards the future of the gaming industry.
I want to start off this whole discussion with one giant caveat: Do not get mad at the console makers for this. It?s true they likely pay for much of this to happen. It?s true they are the ones that want this exclusive content. But, as a consumer, we can?t get mad at them. They are watching out for themselves. Should Nintendo care what the Xbox, PS3, and PC Gamers get? No, of course not. Should Sony care what content Microsoft gets? No, what they concern themselves with is their console - their fanbase. So, while the console makers are major players, we can?t truly get mad at them. They are doing what they are supposed to do to stay afloat.
Rather, the blame falls upon the game Developers/Publishers, that is if this sort of thing irks you like it does me. In another example, one that is more forgivable, is Wii U?s version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Multiplatform? Of course. Exclusive Nintendo related content? Yes. For those unaware, there are several Nintendo themed costumes available to unlock and use in the game. This doesn?t bother me, and that?s regardless of my Nintendo love. Even if this happened for Sony, it wouldn?t bother me either. So, lets a draw a line on the real issue.
What Nintendo has done to help get exclusivity with a title in Tekken Tag Tournament doesn?t actually effect the entirety of the games content on a base level. What Ubisoft and Sony have done with Assassin?s Creed III is create extra content (or intentionally left out content if you prefer) that only Sony gamers can experience. Sure, you can?t get Nintendo costumes on other consoles either, but there is a big difference here. I refer to the costumes as ?cameo? appearances. Cameo appearances for Nintendo stuff likely doesn?t appeal to people who don?t play Nintendo games. It makes financial sense.
For Ubisoft, doing this with Assassin?s Creed III is either some version of selling out, or simply giving in for money. To be fair, we love Ubisoft here at ZI. Their work on ZombiU is fantastic and we recognize they are one of the Wii U?s top supporters. That still doesn?t mean, for consumers, this makes sense. I shouldn?t be paying the same $59.99 that the PS3 fans are paying only to get LESS content because of the console on which I choose to play it on.
I am fine with time based exclusivity. Like ?Sony gets these extra missions at launch, a month later the Xbox gets it, a month after that PC, and a month after that the Wii U?. That?s fine. At least everyone is getting the same value for their dollar as a consumer. Sure, maybe I have to wait longer, but its not like I don?t have other things I could be doing in the game until that content arrives. At least I would have the mind to know, as a consumer, that I?m still going to get that content.
This is sort of like the direction we all fear in the industry of something I like to call ?compartmentalized games?. That refers to not getting full and complete games at launch, and having to pay extra money every few weeks or so to get additional content. In theory, I have no problem with DLC, or as it use to be called? expansion packs. These have been around for ages. It?s just easier to distribute and more readily available for consumers. What I don?t like is receiving a game that is so obviously designed around the DLC. As in, I go to an area that it looks like I can access, but a pop up box or a NPC tells me I can?t unless I get x, x being the DLC I have to buy to access it. Games simply shouldn?t be built that way.
Own a Wii U, Xbox 360, or PC? Well, you wont get to play the missions involving America?s greatest traitor.
Assassin?s Creed III?s exclusive missions for the Playstation 3 aren?t exactly like that. No one is saying because we don?t have that content on other platforms that a hole will be in the game. I am not saying the initial game isn?t a full on experience that doesn?t need DLC. I am simply stating that if the content is going to exist, ALL fans of the game that can play the game should be able to, eventually have access to it. Heck, make me pay $5 for it. It may not be fair, but at least I can access it if I really want it that badly.
I just hope that compartmentalized games and ?forced exclusive content? isn?t the future of the gaming industry as we know it. The benefits for the console companies are clear: The benefit to the Developer (outside of behind the scenes monetary value) and the Consumer are not.
ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The extensive system of levees along the Mississippi River has done much to prevent devastating floods in riverside communities. But the levees have also contributed to the loss of Louisiana's wetlands. By holding in floodwaters, they prevent sediment from flowing into the watershed and rebuilding marshes, which are compacting under their own weight and losing ground to sea-level rise.
Reporting in Nature Geoscience, a team of University of Pennsylvania geologists and others used the Mississippi River flood of the spring of 2011 to observe how floodwaters deposited sediment in the Mississippi Delta. Their findings offer insight into how new diversions in the Mississippi River's levees may help restore Louisiana's wetlands.
While scientists and engineers have previously proposed ways of altering the levee system to restore some of the natural wetland-building ability of the Mississippi, this is among the only large-scale experiments to demonstrate how these modifications might function.
The study was headed by Douglas Jerolmack, an assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Penn, and Federico Falcini, who at the time was a postdoctoral researcher in Jerolmack's lab and is now at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Rome. Benjamin Horton, an associate professor in the Earth and Environmental Science Department; Nicole Khan, a doctoral student in Horton's lab; and Alessandro Salusti, a visiting undergraduate researcher also contributed to the work. The Penn researchers worked with Rosalia Santoleri, Simone Colella and Gianluca Volpe of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche; Leonardo Macelloni, Carol B. Lutken and Marco D'Emidio of the University of Mississippi; Karen L. McKee of the U.S. Geological Survey; and Chunyan Li of Louisiana State University.
The 2011 floods broke records across several states, damaged homes and crops and took several lives. The destruction was reduced, however, because the Army Corps of Engineers opened the Morganza Spillway, a river-control structure, for the first time since 1973 to divert water off of the Mississippi into the Atchafalaya River Basin. This action involved the deliberate flooding of more than 12,000 square kilometers and alleviated pressures on downstream levees and spared Baton Rouge and New Orleans from the worst of the flood.
For the Penn researchers, the opening of the Morganza Spillway provided a rare look into how floods along the Mississippi may have occurred before engineered structures were put in place to control the river's flow.
"While this was catastrophic to the people living in the Atchafalaya Basin, it was also simulating -- accidentally -- the sort of natural flood that used to happen all the time," Jerolmack said. "We were interested in how this sort of natural flooding scenario would differ from the controlled floods contained within levees that we normally see in the Delta."
To capitalize on this opportunity, the team began examining satellite images showing the plume of sediment-laden water emerging from the mouths of the Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers. They calculated the amount of sediment in the plumes for the duration of the flood based on the ocean color in the satellite images and calibrated these data to field samples taken from a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. Their boat sampling also allowed them to gather data on the speed of the plume and the extent to which river water mixed with ocean water.
From the satellite images, researchers observed that the Mississippi River unleashed a jet of water into the ocean. In contrast, the waters diverted into the Atchafalaya Basin spread out over 100 kilometers of coastline, the sediment lingering in a wide swampy area.
"You have this intentionally flooded Atchafalaya Basin and when those flood waters hit the coast they were trapped there for a month, where tides and waves could bring them back on shore," Jerolmack said. "Whereas in the Mississippi channel, where all the waters were totally leveed, you could see from satellite images this sort of fire hose of water that pushed the sediment from the river far off shore."
The researchers used a helicopter to travel to 45 sites across the two basins, where they sampled sediment cores. They observed that sediment deposited to a greater extent in the Atchafalaya Basin than in any area of the Mississippi Basin wetlands, even though the Mississippi River plume contained more total sediment.
The recently deposited sediments lacked plant roots and were different in color and consistency from the older sediments. Laboratory analyses of diatoms, or photosynthetic algae, also revealed another signature of newly deposited sediments: They contained a higher proportion of round diatoms to rod-shaped diatoms than did deeper layers of sediment.
"This diatom ratio can now serve as an indicator for freshwater floods," Horton said. "With longer sediment cores and analyses of the diatoms, we may be able to work out how many floods have occurred, how much sediment they deposited and what their recurrence intervals were."
Taken together, the researchers' findings offer a large-scale demonstration of how flooding over the Atchafalaya's wide basin built up sediment in wetland areas, compared to the more-focused plume of water from the Mississippi River. Jerolmack says this "natural experiment" provides a convincing and reliable way of gathering data and information about how changes in the Mississippi's levees and control structures could help restore marsh in other areas of the Delta.
"One of the things that we found here is that the Atchafalaya, which is this wide, slow plume, actually produced a lot of sedimentation over a broad area," Jerolmack said. "We think that what the Atchafalaya is showing us on a field scale is that this is the sort of diversion that you would need in order to create effective sedimentation and marsh building."

How do you find the right flooring when you have so much to choose from? And where do you go, and who to select for the job? Selecting the flooring is probably the easy part as you have many samples and types and materials to choose from, but how do you decide what is best, and at the best price? Your style and your budget will quickly separate the chaff from the wheat and determine what you can afford.
Determining the right flooring for the best price
? Think about the room or area where you'll be installing the flooring. What does it look like, how much is it used, and what kind of traffic flow does it have? Maintenance and performance concerns should also be factored in. Is the room cold? Does it need carpeting or under-floor heating?
?? Set a price range and evaluate the design and performance features of each option. Factor in the installation costs if you're not planning to do this yourself. This is in addition to the square-foot cost of the new flooring itself.
?? If you're not doing this yourself, hire a reputable contractor. Ask for references, and speak to people who've used him before. If he can't produce references, be warned. He is probably a fly-by-night laborer, and you won't see him again.
? If he is a reputable contractor, don't pay money up front. You will pay him at the end of the job, when the work has been done to your satisfaction.
? Explore other options. Modern, styling products like laminate and resilient vinyl flooring offer durable, affordable and easy-to-maintain surfaces that will hold up through years of wear. Flooring should blend in with the style of your home whether it's Victorian, country, traditional, contemporary, or eclectic. Take into account the size of the room. For instance, tiny tiles will be too busy in a large room, while a large-scale design will overwhelm a smaller space. The latest advances in resilient and laminate flooring offer fashionable colors and textures combined with durability, comfort, function, easy maintenance and affordability.
?? When choosing flooring, determine how it will stand up to factors like direct sunlight, water spills, furniture scrapes, tracked-in dirt, cleaning detergents, and foot traffic. Bear in mind that natural materials such as hardwood or ceramic tiles are more fragile than many other options. For instance, it makes sense to install laminate flooring in high-traffic areas even though you love hardwood.
? Keep in mind the work involved when installing different types of flooring; tile floors and hardwood being the most difficult to install and probably requiring a professional installer.
? Resilient laminate flooring can be easily installed. Because of its layered construction, these types of flooring will not expand or contract, but lie flat and stay flat by floating in place, eliminating the need for glue or nails - unlike traditional flooring. Flooring systems that don't require glue also help the environment.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Sting has moved the location of his "Back to Bass Tour" concert in the Philippines following a petition by environmentalists who said the original venue is owned by a conglomerate that plans to uproot 182 trees for a parking lot and mall expansion in a northern mountain city.
The SM Mall of Asia Arena said on Saturday that changing the site of the Dec. 9 concert was "the decision of the artist himself."
"Understandably, the known environment advocate artist was left with no choice in spite of the SM representatives' appeal," it said in a statement.
SM Prime Holdings, which operates SM malls and the arena on Manila Bay, is owned by the Philippines' richest man, mall mogul Henry Sy.
Environmentalists said in their petition that as a champion of the environment, "Sting can't be saving rainforests and enabling SM to rape the environment at the same time!"
Sting and his wife Trudie Styler established The Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to protect tropical rainforests and the people who live there.
Arena business manager Arnel Gonzales told The Associated Press that the venue became "collateral damage" in the environmentalists' campaign.
"With this successful move to stop Sting from holding the concert at SM MOA Arena, and referring to the venue as an 'oppressor,' it is now looking more like the court battle has extended from saving trees, to ruining a corporate giant's reputation completely," the arena said in its statement.
A local court has temporarily stopped the mall expansion plans in northern Baguio city.
Karlo Marko Altomonte, who initiated the petition, wrote Sting's foundation saying that removing the trees would significantly increase air pollution and the risk of landslides and flooding in an area near schools.
"Thank you, Sting, for helping us defend our environment, our heritage, our home," he wrote on his Facebook page.

We live in a human-dominated world. For many of our fellow creatures, this means a fragmented world, as human conduits to friends, family, and resources sever corridors that link the natural world. Our expanding web of highways, cities, and intensive agriculture traps many animals and plants in islands and cul-de-sacs of habitat, held back by barriers of geography or architecture from reaching mates, food, and wider resources.
A team of researchers, managers, and ecological risk assessors review the current state-of-the-art in landscape connectivity planning, offering models, case studies, and advice for coping with the uncertainty inherent in dynamic, real-world conditions in the Ecological Society of America's 16th volume of Issues in Ecology.
Connectivity doesn't always mean corridors
"The shortest path is not always the best path," said author Sadie Ryan, an ecologist at the State University of New York in Syracuse. "Connectivity is not always just a straight line of greenway that you can identify from an airplane." Connections can be conduits, or more complex extensions of habitat, looking more like a web than a greenbelt. Coastal inhabitants need the depth of the reach of tides as well as the horizontal reach of coastline habitat. Birds may be able to hop from preserve to pea-patch to backyard oasis, depending on their range and flexibility.
The need to move is most obvious for migratory animals and the large animals that need big tracts of territory. Most of us are aware of large and charismatic animals like deer, bear, or coyotes. But plants, and smaller, less itinerant animals, also benefit from connections to wider spaces.
"Landscape connectivity is as diverse as the animals that live in it," said lead author Deborah Rudnick, an environmental scientist with Integral Consulting Inc, in Seattle, WA.
On the ground, managers need to address the biology of their focal species, understanding behavior, genetics, adaptation, and habitat. They have to scale up observational and experimental data to predict interactions with other wildlife and physical features of the landscape, layering on the possibility of climate changing, waterways shifting, and human life encroaching. "It's a massive amount of info to keep in your head simultaneously. I want people to step away from this review with a sense of that complexity," said Rudnick.
No perfect solutions
Opening corridors can sometimes aid the flow of invasive species and disease, as well as the species at the heart of conservation planning. All management plans involve trade-offs?whether that means obtaining the best versus the most available land, or favoring a single endangered species at the possible expense of others in its ecological community.
Some planners prefer to focus on preserving ecosystem services, rather than specific species, in an effort to preserve an ecological community more holistically. But there is no perfect solution. Unpredictable future conditions are unavoidable complications to conservation efforts, and climate change in particular could throw a ringer into the best laid plans.
"We are no longer living in a world where we can preserve perfect habitat," said Ryan.
Climate change means wildlife will move?unpredictably
Climate change, and wildlife's response to climate change, is not a linear process. We can't expect all species simply to move to colder climes, nor expect ecological communities to move as complete units, said Ryan and Rudnick. Species have independent capacities to adapt and move, decoupled from the ecological relationships of predator to prey, pollinator to flower, or grazer to grass.
"We're seeing species moving to new territory independently, remixing existing communities and shaking conservation definitions," said Rudnick. "What do we mean by quote-un-quote conserving a community? What does it mean in the face of climate change? You cannot expect a community to stay in the place that it was in the face of major changes in their environmental conditions."
Our models, and management, must adapt to conditions changing in real time. Flexibility is not generally a virtue of government regulations. The timescale of legal decision-making is generally much shorter than we would want in order to provide communities, both ecological and anthropological, time to adjust.
Achieving connections for wildlife requires forging connections with people
Corridors and connections are often in the spaces between preserves, the mixed use spaces occupied by human communities. Bridging barriers for wildlife means bridging the needs of the people living in that landscape. It means working with communities to find solutions that are practical, and possible, said the authors, not just from the perspective of science, but also residents, farmers, and industry. A first step is finding a common language. Ryan said she doesn't talk about 'ecosystem services' in rural Uganda. Those aren't Rutooro words. "We ask, "Is the park beneficial to you?"" and locals might say, "It keeps the rain." They perceive benefit from the park, but don't describe it like a scientist. The same is true of English-speaking communities.
You build your models, said Rudnick. "Then you try to put them in the real world. Community needs?that is, human community needs?add a whole layer of complexity to real life implementation."

Leading eating disorders treatment center urges adults and children alike to acknowledge the impact of negative body shape- and weight-centric comments and promote healthy self-esteem
Denver, CO, October 18, 2012 ? A study released in early October in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found that genetics could cause some women, more than others, to feel pressures to be thin and fall victim to body dissatisfaction. During ?Fat Talk? Free Week (October 22-28, 2012) and beyond, Eating Recovery Center, an international center providing comprehensive treatment for eating disorders, urges women and men alike to take a conscious break from weight-focused criticism of themselves and others, to minimize the potentially negative impact these comments could have on body image, self-esteem and the development of eating disorders.
While the fact that genes can influence body type is widely understood, Eating Recovery Center cites this recent study as further evidence demonstrating that genetics can additionally influence the degree to which individuals identify with a thin ideal. Even innocently intended phrases such as ?I?m having a ?fat? day,? or ?You look great, have you lost weight?? can be internalized by people who are more genetically sensitive to comments and perceived judgments about body shape and size. ?Fat talk? can be particularly impactful for children and teenagers, a population whose fragile self-images contend with powerful social pressures to be thin, including media messages and bullying.
?Every day, we are on the receiving end of a barrage of messages that encourage us to be thin ? television commercials glamorizing disordered eating thoughts, social media posts describing new weight loss tools, comments from gossip magazines about celebrity weight gain, and even simple, self-deprecating comments from our friends and families,? explains Julie Holland, MHS, CEDS, chief marketing officer of Eating Recovery Center. ?Under this steady pressure, it is not uncommon to internalize a thin ideology, engrain it in our thought processes and behaviors around food and body image and even impress these same ideals on our loved ones.?
To help men, women and children fight ?fat talk? and promote positive body image and self-esteem in themselves and others, Eating Recovery Center offers these five recommendations:
1. Focus on what your body can do for you, rather than what it looks like. Take stock of the day-to-day activities your body helps you enjoy, regardless of what it looks like.
2. Do away with self-destructive behaviors. Overly critical comments about weight or size can wreak havoc on your body image and the body image of others.
3. Be aware of the comments you make about others. The next time you remark on a celebrity?s weight gain, remember that others can perceive this as a judgment about weight gain in general and they may even relate your comment to themselves.
4. Compliment yourself. Instilling a positive body image starts with the messages you develop about yourself. Make a practice out of complimenting yourself several times a day.
5. Be a critical consumer of media. Remind yourself and others that the images portrayed in the media are often unrealistic, and that body shapes and sizes are often digitally altered and impossible to achieve.
?While ?fat talk? rarely causes eating disorders, curbing this negative dialogue can be a powerful anecdote against the uncontrollable and external risk factors associated with eating disorders,? explains Holland. ?If a loved one?s ?fat talk? accompanies significant weight loss, over-exercising or other concerning disordered eating behaviors, it is important to intervene early and seek an assessment from a qualified eating disorders professional.?
